Daily flights arrive at Liberia International Airport (LIR), a little more than two hours drive. Those flying into Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose can take a local flight into the Nosara Airport via Sansa or Nature Air, make the five hour drive or take a bus.
Rental cars and Driving
Rentals cars are available in Nosara from four agencies, National, Economy, Alamo and Toyota Rent a Car, and can all be reserved online. Some agencies offer one-way rentals for an extra fee, but there may be a minimum 3-day requirement. Quoted rates may not include insurance, some of which is mandatory and some optional. Count on an extra $15/day for the mandatory insurance. Your credit card may provide some extra insurance but be sure to understand your contract.
Reservations are strongly recommended. You need to be over 21. Never leave anything inside your car and you’ll never have anything to worry about. Use common sense and caution and remember that while you’re on the road you can never be too careful. We have dirt, mud, rocks, river crossings, and this is all part of the adventure. So please buckle up, drive slowly and enjoy yourself.
You can have a two-wheel drive car if you are visiting between January and April, but it’s never as fun. Traffic police are a separate entity from the town police. Don’t give them a reason to pull you over by always wearing your seatbelt, carrying your passport and driver’s license with you, or copies thereof. Most importantly drive safely and dont kick up so much dust. You may be on “safari” but the rest of the people are just living life here, so please drive through our roads as you would want us to drive through your neighborhood.
Another driving tip: Road signs in Costa Rica are often ambiguous so use a copy of our google map to help navigation. Good maps of Nosara may now be purchased from the Nosara Civic Association at their office near the cell tower. One-way bridges, and there are many, will have a Ceda or Yield sign on one side, so be sure to look for this.
Local taxi and van service is available from several drivers, including airport pickups and returns. Rates are typically based on the trip and not the number of passengers.
Bus Alfaro leaves San Jose daily for Nosara at 5:30 am from their terminal, which taxi drivers know locally as Antigua Coca Cola or the old Coke building. Tickets are 4065 or about $7.50 and its best to buy them a day ahead. Call 2222-2777 in San Jose or 2682-0297 in Nosara.
The final stop is in the village of Nosara near the soccer field. The bus from Nosara to San Jose leaves at 12:30 from that location and will also pick up passengers along the way at Caf de Paris at Playa Guiones.
The more comfortable Interbus no longer visits Nosara but it travels between San Jose and Samara, the beach town about half an hour south. Hotel to hotel pickups in their air-conditioned vans are $39 and can be arranged by calling 2283-5573.
